My story

Since I was young, I’ve always been a creative. Even in school, if I were given the option to take an artistic approach to a project or assignment, I wouldn’t hesitate to do so. I didn’t experiment with realism until I was about fourteen years old. At that time in my life when things were constantly changing and out of control, I found something I could learn to be good at. My art practice became a comfort of my own, an avenue of exploration and expression. In that year, I began commission work, which I continued through my years in Maine Arts Academy (a specialty arts high school) until I left for college in 2022.

When I moved on from my career in childcare in 2025, I found myself naturally falling back into making art, and with my newfound time, sharing it with my community. For the first time, I allowed myself the confidence to market my art, to really take it seriously. I realized that there is so much fulfillment to be found in integrating my art into the world around me.

Once again, I found that my art practice has brought out that fourteen-year-old part of me. Opening another chapter of self-discovery, I began to connect with my indigenous roots. Through my work, I’ve made an effort to educate myself regarding our history and live intentionally in my culture. Reconnecting with the land, and most of all, its teachings of reciprocity.

Inspiration

To connect with oneself as a native person, you must come to understand your indigeneity. This looks different for everyone. I found that my journey required coming home to the land. To the ground on which we all share. To the critters and plants who inhabit it right by our side.

“Our connection to the land is a pathway to understanding ourselves and our purpose.” – Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass

I began to find inspiration in everyday life. The things that folks, including myself, tend to move too fast to admire. In grounding myself physically and mentally in my roots, I’ve been intentional in pausing to see the beautiful things I would have missed otherwise. The intricate pattern of a leaf, the uncanny similarities between plant and human structure, or the way a dead tree serves as the perfect home for rodents, bugs, and birds of all kinds. Besides doing my best to show up and care for the physical land, reciprocity for me also looks like sharing its beauty and story through my art practice. It’s my privilege to use art as a tool to promote the importance of reciprocity in our own communities.

experience

I am a visual artist with over seven years of experience in the creative field. I started in 2018 by practicing pencil portraits and taking on commission work through social media. In 2021, while attending Maine Arts Academy, I took courses on business practice, marketing in the arts, and digital design tools, including Canva and Photoshop. It was then that I started my learning in multimedia, such as painting and block-printing. As of 2024, I have been back in the business of creating and selling my art while learning how to integrate more of my personality and culture into my practice. Now I’m in shops, selling at markets year-round, and working with local galleries and event coordinators along the coast of Maine.

  • Have a seat Brunswick, 2022 - I painted two Adirondack chairs for Have a Seat Brunswick, a community project. Commissioned by Morning Glory Natural Foods on Maine St, the chairs were displayed in front of the store entrance for the duration of the summer.

Community Service Award, 2022 - I was awarded the Customer service certificate for the launch of my charitable business, The People's Portraits. It began as my capstone project in 2021, I sold portrait prints of influential peoples and donated all of the proceeds to one of the credible organizations I offered upon purchase. This endeavor, though short lived, was both fulfilling and educational. It’s the foundation that allowed me to build Artistic Reciprocity into what it is today.
